Engineering of the "Velvelechay - Tahtakorpu" canal

Location

Azerbaijan

The project was financed by the Oil Fund of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEK Fund. This channel is a self-flowing alternative to the Samur-Absheron Channel (SAK).

The purpose of the canal engineering is to improve the water supply of Baku, Sumgayit and the Absheron Peninsula.

The VTK channel originates at Km 50+800 SAC. The main structure of the channel is a 5-span open gateway-regulator, designed to pass the maximum flow rate Q=75 m3/sec. The VTK channel supplies water to the Takhtakerpyu reservoir. The total length of the canal is 31.2 km.

The channel engineering includes:

  • 5 duckers (2 of them – with emergency discharges);
  • 2 tunnels (1 – pressure, 1 - non-pressure);
  • 10 bridges;
  • 31 rain showers under the canal;
  • 5 storm drains over the canal;
  • End discharge into the Takhtakerpyu reservoir.
