Engineering of the new canal for Araz River

Location

Azerbaijan

Client: "Azerbaijan Amelioration And Water Management" OJSC

New river canal was designed in 2010 with the purpose of relieving the existing riverbeds of Araz and Kur Rivers during high flood periods. A riverbed consists of earth canal with total length of 130km and width of 200m at the beginning of the route and 100m after the 5th km. Water supply to the canal is realized by means of headwork located at the right bank of Araz River 800 m higher upstream the existing Bahramtapa Headwork.
The headwork consists of 16-span open-type check sluice (16x5.0m) designed for max. water discharge Q= 700 m3/sec. The structure is equipped with 16 deep wheeled gates QK-85 5,0х3,5-6 m and highway bridge-crossing.

Projected:

  • Three-hole shotcrete siphon 3х (4,0х3,5) on the existing canal named after Azizbekov designed for Q= 70 m3/sec. discharge and having total length of 448 m;
  • Two-hole metal aqueduct 2х D=2000 mm on the existing P-2 canal designed for Q= 8.68m3/sec. discharge and having length of 170 m;
  • Combined aqueduct designed for Q= 1,0 m3/sec. (D= 1200 mm) with total length of 125m.

At the intersection of the new riverbed of the Araz River with the Alat-Bilasuvar highway, a 19-span highway bridge was designed and built – 19x(8.6x3.0) m.
